The table below summarises the main changes in English covered by the new National Curriculum 2014.

  • Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1)
  • Handwriting – not currently assessed under the national curriculum – is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy
  • Spoken English has a greater emphasis, with children to be taught debating  and presenting skills

Year 3 

Autumn Term - Our writing topics for this term will include working on a range of recounts, narrative writing and instructional texts. We will be doing lots of Drama and collaborative activities to support our writing. Guided Reading will focus on a whole class book study. The children will also be bringing home their personal spelling lists to practise.

 

Spring Term - English lessons include writing, reading and speaking and listening.  Our writing topics for this term are poetry, spelling, grammar and punctuation.  Reading sessions will include a class book study (group B) and short extracts (group A), to develop reading comprehension.

 

In Summer term, we will be looking at authors. We will be exploring characters and settings and looking at writing style. During the second half of the summer term, we will be studying the ‘Pied Piper of Hamelin’.  We will continue to focus on our spelling, grammar and punctuation.

 

                                                           

Year 4

Autumn Term - English lessons include writing, reading and speaking and listening.  Our writing topics for this term will include fables, Poetry: Creatures Great and Small, Writing For Real: The Fun Fit Factory and Multi-genre: Eye Of The Wolf.  We will link our reading material to these topics.  This term we will look more closely at reading for enjoyment and comprehension and read a whole class text called ‘Grandpa Chatterji’.

 

Spring Term - English lessons include writing, reading and speaking and listening.  Our writing topics for this term will include fables, Poetry: Creatures Great and Small, Writing For Real: The Fun Fit Factory and Multi-genre: Eye Of The Wolf.  We will link our reading material to these topics.  We will continue to look more closely at reading for enjoyment and comprehension.

 

Summer Term English lessons include writing, reading and speaking and listening. Our writing topics for this term will include Adverts, Myths and Historical fiction. We will link our reading material to these topics. This term we will look more closely at reading for enjoyment and comprehension

 

 Year 5

Autumn Term - We will be exploring a wide range of text types during the term to broaden pupil’s knowledge of different genres.  The writing tasks will be both fiction and non-fiction but all will be aimed at extending vocabulary and sentence styles.  The work will form part of units from our new  ”Teaching Toolkits”.

 

Spring Term - We will be looking at a varied text types during the term to extend pupil’s knowledge of different genres. The writing tasks will be both fiction and non-fiction but all will be aimed at extending vocabulary and sentence styles. Many of the themes will be based around mystery and intrigue, topics that inspire writing in children of this age.

 

Summer Term - We will be exploring a wide range of text types during the term to extend pupil’s knowledge of different genres.                                         Year 6                                        

Autumn Term -  English lessons include writing, reading and speaking and listening.  Our writing topics for this term include persuasive writing, writing balanced arguments, journalistic writing and story writing.  We will link our reading material to these topics.  This term we will look more closely at the reading comprehension element of the SATs papers and the techniques needed to complete these successfully.  GAPS intervention groups will run throughout the term for all pupils.
